Mother's Day Moment
Publishing Icon Nancy Light Spotlights Rag Lady
Publishing icon Nancy Light had some thoughts on her favorite fictional mothers and grandmothers. Susie Black is humbled and honored that Nancy named Nana, the maternal grandmother of protagonist Holly Schlivnik, featured in the award-winning women’s fiction book, Rag Lady, as one of her top four picks. Here is Nancy’s complete list:
Since Mother’s Day is soon, I thought it would be fun to share my favorite moms or grandmothers in fiction. As a reader, I have read close to a million books. I have many unforgettable mother or grandmother characters I adore. They bring a smile to my face every time I think of them. They are caring, loving, funny, and add unsolicited advice whenever possible. I’ve narrowed down my list to four. After you finish reading mine, please comment on who your favorite mother or grandmother character in fiction is.
The Sun Never Dies by A.R. Hadley – Beth is a single mother with a grown son. One fateful night, she meets Liam, and her life is never the same. Beth grows in so many ways over the course of the book. It’s an emotional journey and makes me unforgettable.

Weres and Witchery by AK Nevermore – Jena’s aunt may be dying, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t the funniest, most sarcastic mother-type character I’ve had the privilege to read. She’s the keeper of family lore, yet she makes Jena earn every story. She pokes and prods Jena until it hurts. But her aunt knows what’s best. She steals every scene she’s in.

Rag Lady by Susie Black – Nana is one of the best grandmother characters I’ve ever read. She’s a wise woman, but gives her advice in hilarious ways. She will make you laugh, cry, and wish she were your grandmother. No one does it better than Susie Black.

Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder - Caroline “Ma” Ingalls is one of the strongest mothers in fiction. She’s an example of what it means to be a frontier mother. She makes a loving home with little to no money and under extreme hardship. She’s strict when she needs to be, but always with love.
