When I first picked up “Death by Pins and Needles,” I knew I was in for a delightful ride through another cozy mystery by Susie Black. As I dove into the pages, I found myself quite literally on pins and needles, eagerly anticipating each twist and turn. The protagonist, Holly Schlivnik, is a standout character—an amateur sleuth with a sharp wit and a knack for getting herself into sticky situations. She’s three-dimensional and clever, making her a joy to follow as she unravels the mystery. The quirky Yenta friendship that surrounds Holly adds layers of humor and charm, creating a diverse ensemble of characters that mesh together perfectly. The interactions of all the characters collectively kept me guessing and entertained from start to finish. The dialogue in this book is engaging, and the intriguing narrative never lets up. I couldn’t help but think of my dad while reading, as Holly’s quips and sayings echoed the familiar phrases he used, like “Dead men tell no tales” and “What’s that have to do with the price of tea in Timbuktu?” These nostalgic moments made the story feel personal and close to my heart. I also appreciated the vivid imagery woven throughout the book. It becomes particularly striking in the middle and toward the end, pulling me further into the gripping suspense of the plot. Susie Black masterfully blends humor and suspense, with plenty of laughs and some delightfully bumbling mistakes from Holly. The storyline is high-stakes and filled with fantastic forensic details, perfectly planted red herrings, and just the right number of suspects. The plot is twisty, with dramatic revelations that kept me on my toes, and the conclusion was a killer ending that left me thoroughly satisfied. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, Susie pulled the rug out from under me, proving once again why this book is unputdownable. I will admit that I lost a few hours of sleep trying to unravel the mystery alongside Holly. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next adventure in the series, “Death by Surfboard.” A little shoutout to Susie Black: one is never too old to enjoy the Beach Boys! 😉 Thank you for another whirlwind of a tale that left me wanting more.
