Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, which established the official design of the U.S. flag with 13 alternating red and white stripes and a blue field with 13 white stars representing the original 13 states. Although widely observed, Flag Day is not a federal public holiday, and most businesses and government offices remain open.
