I crept to the door and put my ear against it. Footsteps and the uneven gait of a big person wearing heavy boots clomped across the hall. The noise in the hall grew louder. Not a good sign. I desperately looked around for a place to hide. I shoved Eleanor’s chair out of the way and dove under the desk ass-first, facing back towards the far wall. I leaned back and yelped in surprise as I fell backward onto the carpet. Eleanor’s desk opened in the front. Either the company bought her a cheaper desk, or Eleanor preferred to stretch out her legs. I sat up too QUICKLY and banged my head on the edge of the metal desk opening as I tried to slide back through. I angled to the side to pull myself out. I misjudged the width of the back desk opening. I dropped the hobo purse upside down, and naturally, everything spilled out all over the floor. I threw all the crap back in without looking and zipped the bag closed. Would I ever find my car keys? Doubtful. I sucked as a second-story woman.
